6th Korean Classification of Crime for Statistical Purposes (KCCS)

Daejeon (Republic of Korea), 25 November 2021 –The Sixth Korean Classification of Crime for Statistical Purposes (KCCS) was organized by Statistics Korea (KOSTAT). The seminar brought together KOSTAT, Ministry of Justice, Korean National Police Agency, Police Science Institute, and respective academic research teams to discuss progress.

The Seminar was opened with Keunkwan Ryu, Commissioner of KOSTAT, Dae-kyung Kwak, Chairman, Korean Criminological Association, and Wook Kang, Chairman, Korea Security Science Association. 

The CoE attended the meeting, to understand national challenges and to identify ways to provide further technical assistance to RoK in ICCS (International Classification of Crime for Statistical Purposes) implementation. 

The program offered presentations and panel discussions on ICCS implementation progress and challenges in RoK. Due to KOSTAT's continuous effort to implement, RoK is at 82.3% to finishing the correspondence tables with ICCS. The CoE strengthened partnership with ICCS implementing stakeholders by participating in the panel discussion ‘Areas of Improvements for KCCS’. During the session, Dong Kyu Lee, Superintendent, Police Human Resources Development Institute, delivered a presentation on ‘Measures to utilize criminal classification to enhance international comparison of criminal statistics’ and Hyun Jung Park, CoE Coordinator participated as a panelist. Prominent topics during this session were the feasibility of police report data, after follow-up analysis, as an alternative data source for national crime statistics, possibility of piloting ICCS on police reporting data, and need for ICCS update according to crime trend. 60 relevant stakeholders attended.
