Daejeon (Republic of Korea), 30 December 2022 - The UNODC-KOSTAT Centre of Excellence for Statistics on Crime and Criminal Justice in Asia and the Pacific (CoE) released the Regional Snapshot 4 - Prison Population in Southern Asia.
The Regional Snapshot is a publication series of the CoE to deliver statistical information on crime and criminal justice issues with intuitive visualizations and accessible insights for policymakers from different backgrounds, including those with no previous knowledge of statistics.
The First Regional Snapshot highlighted the prison population trends in Asia and the Pacific over two decades, particularly focusing on the imprisonment rate, the number of detainees per 100,000 population, and unsentenced detainee that is used to monitor SDG 16.3.2.
Since the publication of the Regional Overview, the following editions focused on sub-regions: South-eastern Asia, Central Asia, and Southern Asia. The fourth Regional Snapshot - Prison Population in Southern Asia addressed the prison population issues in Southern Asia, home to 25% of the world population. Considering the population, the Southern Asia imprisonment rate was the lowest with 48 prisoners per 100,000 population. However, the unsentenced share has consistently been the highest since 2000. More information can be found here.
As part of our commitment to improving the statistical capacity of the region for evidence-based policymaking, the CoE will keep moving forward with our activities; provide technical support on data production, collection, and analysis, deliver reliable and accurate information, and so on.
