The conference was co-organized by Statistics Korea (KOSTAT) and the United Nations Statistics Division (UNSD).
The conference discussed coordination between the national statistical system and other national agencies to improve the role of National Statistical Offices (NSOs) in a time of crisis, timely and disaggregated data to understand how the virus spreads and planning response and allocate resources in the pandemic situation.
The Conference launched with opening remarks from Dr. Keunkwan Ryu; and Commissioner of Statistics Korea (KOSTAT), Mr. Stefan Schweinfest, Director of UN Statistics Division.
Guilherme Miranda Dutra, Methodology Officer of the CoE, joined Session 7 on “Addressing the New Technical and Financial Needs and Next Steps”, 2 September, which was moderated by Ms. Claire Melamed, Chief Executive Officer of Global Partnership for Sustainable Development Data. Mr. Dutra examined crime statistics integration within the broader discussion on data for development, the recent technological changes that expanded data availability, and the change to the construct of research questions as a result. Mr. Dutra also shed light on limited data collection during the pandemic due to mobility restrictions, the importance of exploring new approaches to data delivery while ensuring high quality and accuracy.
As pointed out in Mr. Dutra’s presentation, CoE provides technical support to Member States for innovative approach to tackling challenges including advocating for the adoption of the International Classification of Crime for Statistical Purposes (ICCS); regional trainings to improve SDG data collection; tailored trainings on survey methodology for adoption of the Crime Victimization and Corruption Survey.
