Malé (Maldives), 7-8 November 2023 – The CoE, in collaboration with the UNODC Research and Trend Analysis Branch (RAB), delivered a workshop on the implementation of the International Classification of Crime for Statistical Purposes (ICCS) in the Maldives.
The workshop was organized to introduce participants from national institutions with relevance to crime and criminal justice statistics to the ICCS, detailing its application, benefits, strengths, and potential challenges that can be encountered during the implementation.
Conducted over two days, the workshop featured presentations detailing the utility and structure of ICCS, complemented by practical exercises and the introduction to the Statistical Framework for Measuring the Gender-related Killing of Women and Girls. Through these exercises, participants gained insights into the comprehensive implementation process, underscoring the significance of consistent open communication among institutions. Taekyun Kim, Assistant Director of Standard Division at Statistics Korea (KOSTAT) joined the trainers to share insights on their national experience in the ICCS implementation process.
Participants included technical experts from pertinent national agencies: Maldives Bureau of Statistics (MBS), Department of Judicial Administration, National Integrity Commission, Anti-Corruption Commission, Maldives Police Service, Children's Ombudsperson's Office, Maldives Correctional Service, Human Rights Commission, Attorney General's Office, Prosecutor General's Office, Judicial Service Commission, Family Protection Authority, Department of Juvenile Justice, and Ministry of Health.
The meeting successfully achieved its objective of bringing together Maldivian institutions involved in crime and criminal justice statistics, fostering awareness of the necessity for a standardized national crime classification. Concrete examples and exercises facilitated a deeper understanding of the ICCS and its implementation process. Throughout the workshop, participants actively engaged in proposed activities, and representatives from various national institutions expressed their commitment to advancing inter-agency collaboration and reiterated their dedication to implementing the ICCS under the guidance of MBS.
