Seoul (Republic of Korea), 26 September 2022 – The CoE participated in a forum held by Statistics Korea (KOSTAT) on 26 September 2022. It brought a host of national organizations and relevant stakeholders together to discuss statistical classification in the Republic of Korea. Participants included the Ministry of Justice, Korean National Police Agency, Korean Institute of Criminology and Justice (KICJ), Police Science Institute, Korea Institute for Health and Social Affairs, Health Insurance Review and Assessment Service, Korea Development Institute, and academia.
The program introduced the work of the Republic of Korea in standardizing statistical classification across different areas such as industry, health, occupation, and crime in line with the international standards for evidence-based policymaking. During the session, Dae-Hoon Kwak, a professor from Chungnam University delivered a presentation on ‘Domestic Crime Trends and Crime Classification,’ to share progress and suggest possible ways forward for ICCS implementation. Hyun Jung Park, CoE Coordinator, participated as a panelist sharing other national examples of utilizing artificial intelligence for ICCS.
The forum allowed the CoE to successfully enhance partnership with academics and institutions in the field of crime and criminal justice statistics, to identify methods to contribute to the KCCS Task Force, to gauge challenges and progress for ICCS implementation in the Republic of Korea and better understand national needs to determine activities for next year, which may include an ICCS workshop and e-learning courses.
