CoE organizes the session on ‘‘Methodologies for Human Trafficking Statistics’ to support the World Day Against Trafficking in Persons.

Jeju (Republic of Korea) Virtual, 2-11 August 2022 – The Intensive Course on Measures to Address Human Trafficking: the 3P Paradigm is co-organized by UN Institute for Training and Research International Training Centre for Authorities and Leaders Jeju (UNITAR CIFAL Jeju) and Regional Support Office (RSO) of the Bali Process, 2-11 August 2022, in a metaverse platform.

The course gathered academics, researchers, police force representatives, and anti-trafficking officials in Asia and the Pacific region and international organizations working on Trafficking in Persons (TiP).

 

The course was divided into four workshops, grouped according to theme: Understanding the TIP/SOM, The Necessity of Victim Protection and Protection Measures for Victims, Effective Legal Systems and Connection between Trafficking Victims and Prosecution, and Prevention Measures to Deter Trafficking. At the last workshop, the CoE organized the session on ‘Methodologies for Human Trafficking Statistics’ examining UNODC tools, standards, importance of data, and the difference between prevalence and detection related to TiP.

During this session, Seong Jae Shin, CoE Research Officer, moderated and presented on the ‘UNODC CoE Research: TiP’, elaborating on the role of the CoE in TiP data research. Marie Jane Fatiaki, Social Affairs Officer, UNODC Fiji, presented on ‘TiP Data Collection Methods, Challenges and Opportunities’. Followed by presentations from Badar Munir, Information Management Consultant, UNODC and Javed Akbar Riaz, Director, Anti Human Smuggling (AHS) Directorate, Federal Investigation Agency of Pakistan, sharing the national experience on working with UNODC in collecting human trafficking and human smuggling data.

The conference provided a good opportunity for the CoE to strengthen ties with institutions and national institutions for future collaboration related to TiP and data.
